Journey before destination.
CUSAI is committed to better driver training. We call our approach the Four Horizons: client-led coaching that teaches the whole driver, from the controls under their hands to the person behind the wheel, not just the half the test can see. Written for Approved Driving Instructors.
The Four Horizons
Four horizons. The test
reaches only the nearest two.
CUSAI's model of the complete driver. A driver works across widening horizons, from hands on the controls out to who they are as a person. The far horizons govern the near ones, and a learner can be prepared for the driving test while the two that decide their survival stay untouched.
4 horizons
The Driver
The values, self-control and honest self-image of the person at the wheel. The most stable horizon, and the most safety critical.
The Journey
The why, where, when and who of a trip, settled before the key turns.
The Road
Reading traffic, planning ahead and joining the moving world without drama.
The Machine
Working the car until the controls run without a conscious thought.
The driving test measures the bottom two horizons and issues a licence. It never looks at the top two. That gap is where newly qualified drivers come undone.
Goal-Led Coaching
Coaching is not the
absence of instruction.
Instruction addresses behaviour. Coaching addresses the beliefs and feelings underneath it. A good lesson runs both, and the ratio changes with every pupil.
CUSAI
Tell the learner what to do. For a brand new skill that is often exactly right. Guide, prompt, then let them practise it alone. It builds the near horizons, and the test rewards it.
Raise the learner's awareness, hand them the choice, let them own the consequence. A driver who has only ever been told has practised one skill: doing what they are told. Coaching is the only thing that reaches the far horizons.
Goal-Led Coaching is our name for getting that balance right across all four horizons. The skill is the ratio, not the slogan. That is what effective driving instruction is actually for.
Who this is for
Written for the instructor who
suspects the test is the low bar.
Still being taught that instruction is the whole job. Here is the part of the craft that reaches the horizons the test ignores.
You can run the test in your sleep. This is aimed at the ceiling: self-evaluation, the ratio question, the check-test standard, the learner who passes and crashes anyway.
CUSAI's credential for instructors who can coach the whole driver, all four horizons, not just the near two. The mark of someone who works past the test.
The Series
The field notes on
coaching the whole driver.
The live CUSAI corpus as one readout. Take it in order, or take the junction your next lesson needs. New field notes land on a regular drip.

Overcoming Fear
When Learning to Drive
Fear narrows a learner's attention at the exact moment they need it wide. Where it comes from behind the wheel, and how a coach steadies the person before steadying the car.
